When people talk about their holiday in Thailand, changes are they have been to locations such as Phuket, Bangkok, Phi Phi Islands and Koh Samui and, they would have chosen these locations with good reason. I have however found it amazing how few by comparison have traveled the approximate 150 extra kilometers from Phuket to Khao Lak to experience the wonders of this beautiful region located on the west coast of Thailand and discover the fantastic resorts it has to offer.
It could of course be that the locals actually want to keep the area more low key for tourism because its natural beauty is absolutely pristine and the much lower numbers of resorts means it never really crowded and the area retains and authentic character. The footprint of mass tourism on the environmentis therefore also much less and the relaxed atmosphere and idyllic scenery many people come to Thailand for in the first place remain largely undisturbed.
What to do and see
The sightseeing opportunities and recreational activities are endless. But once again, here nature sees to all that; so if a holiday in Thailand for you is synonymous with late night parties and the rows of bars and crowded streets of Patong, Khao Lak might not be for you. This is a place where you want to get up early and go on a morning dive which showcases a world of colourful coral reefs and exotic fish species.Or you could spend the day elephant trekking or hiking in pristine rain forest where you will discover glittering streams and waterfalls.
You could also visit the almost mysterious-likePhang Nga Bay and its many scattered islands including the uninhabited Koh Ta Chai, Koh Bon andnearby Surin and Similan islands which are listed among the top dive sites in the world.Tonight you could walk into the sunset on a flawless beach and possibly not encounter another soul.
Only a short distance away is the spectacular Khao Sok national park where you can kayak on the Sok River and stay over a night in one of the floating cabins on the lake before exploring the jungles the next morning. Khao Lak is a nature lovers dream and meant for people who can appreciate spectacular surroundings in the absence of too much commercial activity.
Where to stay
If like me, you also prefer this kind of vacation in an exotic location such as Thailand I suggest booking accommodation and making the trip to Khao Lak. The area’s resorts are great for any requirement from family holidays to romantic hideaways. To top it all, many 5 star resorts in Khao Lak is seemingly more affordable than in neighboring high tourist areas like Phuket for example. If you check out local accommodation booking operators like hotelsphuket.travel you are sure to find some awesome deals to make your money go even further. The following are some of the best hotels to stay, all located directly on the beach and surrounded by profound natural beauty.
Beyond Resort Khao Lak
Ever looked at images of hotels boxed in by more hotels? You are not going to find this in Khao Lak and definitely not at Beyond Resort. On one side the villas are flanked by a small lagoon and on the other side and to its rear it nestles into lush tropical greenery. This is the place for a honeymoon with life time memories. The resort does not even allow children below the age of 18 years to make sure a certain atmosphere is maintained. It has the most charming villas featuring their own private pools located right on the beachfront.
Mai Khao Lak
Pakweeb is another of the area’s pristine beaches and spilling directly on the stretch of glittering sand Mai Khaolak Beach Resort fits perfectly into the idyllic scenery and tranquil location. Though this is 5 star resort offering luxury villas with chic and snazzy interiors you will be pleasantly surprised at the budget friendly accommodation prices. It has villas with their own private pools hidden away from any peering eyes and also villas with direct access from your private terrace directly into the main pool which meanders through the resort. One of the most striking elements of many of the villas is the floor to ceiling windows running the full length of your room to really capitalize on the tropical scenery outside.
The Sands Khao Lak by Katathani
This is in my opinion of the coolest family friendly hotels in Khao Lak. Take my word for it, at The Sands the children are going to be smiling so you are going to be smiling. Besides a kids club, kids pool and water slides the accommodation for families with children is simply outstanding. The family rooms have been given an uplifting décor and children have separate bunk beds in their own separate corner sealed off by a sliding door. But if you really want to treat the family to the extent thy may never want to leave you should check out the two bedroom suite. Sitting in the lounge you are surrounded by 280 degrees of glass wall to showcase the exotic landscape and glittering ocean outside. The same scenery bedazzles you when you soak in your Jacuzzi tub.
Le Meridien Khao Lak
This is one of those all-rounder 5 star hotels which will satisfy any requirement. It is located on Pakweeb, the same beach as Mai Khaolak resort. It has inter-connected rooms for families so you have complete supervision over your kids while maintaining privacy, beachfront pool villas or villas set adjacent to a placid lagoon which creates an amazing atmosphere.
Another all-rounder J.W Marriott is great for families by also offering inter-connected rooms and kids club with children facilities freeing up time for you to explore the area’s nature. J.W Marriott has created an incredible tranquil and idyllic scene where you can kick back in one of the private gazebo pool stations and have all your thirst quenching needs catered to with the snap of your fingers. It also has rooms with direct access to an enormous pool so you can wade out straight from your private terrace.
When I vacation in far off countries as exotic as Thailand, I want to experience things as authentic as possible and, that includes being surrounded by pristine nature. At the same time there are a few things which are not negotiable and that includes high standard accommodation, services and facilities (with a generous price tag I have to add) and, I need to be close to the ocean. Khao Lak fits the profile just perfectly and I recommend it to anyone who considers visiting Thailand.
